Resin does two things. It bonds the fractured glass back together, which is the point, and it bends light very slightly differently from the glass around it, which is the catch. Out at the edges, up behind the mirror or over on the passenger side, that second effect is irrelevant and a filled chip is simply a faint mark. In the area you actually look through, hour after hour, at night, into low winter sun, it is not irrelevant at all, and a repair there can leave you with a permanent distraction in the worst possible place.
