Feltonville is cut in half by twelve lanes of Roosevelt Boulevard, and every car kept here crosses it or drives it. That is the whole story of the neighborhood's glass. The Boulevard is the fastest road anyone here uses every day, its inner and outer lanes are separated by curbed medians, and the traffic on it includes everything from school buses to tri-axles running to the Northeast. A car that spends ten minutes a day on that road collects stone the way a windshield collects wiper marks, and most Feltonville customers arrive with a chip they cannot pin to a particular moment.
Underneath that, the residential blocks behave like the rest of North Philadelphia: rowhouses, no driveways, parking on both sides and a car left out all night. So we get two very different jobs from the same zip code. In the morning it is a windshield that finally let go on the drive to work; in the afternoon it is a rear door window that somebody put through on a side street off B Street. Both are quoted the same way, before the work starts, and both usually finish the same day. If the car is not fit to be driven, lead with that on the phone and we will talk about bringing the van up rather than have you nurse it down Front Street with a bag taped over the door.
Roosevelt Boulevard runs diagonally across Feltonville with service drives either side, so a local trip often means three separate stops and two lane changes across concrete that has been patched and re-patched at the seams. Rising Sun Avenue cuts through on its own diagonal and carries the bus traffic; Wyoming Avenue and Whitaker Avenue handle the crosstown moves. Front Street runs the western edge straight down toward Erie. The eastern side drops away into the Tacony Creek valley, where the park roads are shaded, damp and covered in grit washed off the slopes after rain. The small residential streets in between are the standard North Philadelphia width, which is to say wide enough for one car once both curbs are parked up.

One, the Boulevard. Nothing else on this list comes close. Twelve lanes of mixed traffic at forty-five, constant lane changing and a road surface that sheds grit at every joint means stone arriving at your windshield with real energy, usually while you are level with a truck. Two, the concrete seams themselves. The Boulevard flexes a car body every few yards, and that flex works on any chip already in the glass until it runs. Front Street is the simplest run: pick it up anywhere in Feltonville and drive south, under the Boulevard, past Wyoming and Luzerne, and keep going to the Erie Avenue area. From the western side of the neighborhood, take Rising Sun Avenue down to 5th Street, then 5th south to Erie and east from there. If you are dropping the car and heading back, the Route 47 and the buses along 5th Street put you home quickly enough.
