The Northeast is the part of Philadelphia that drives like a suburb. Houses have driveways and garages, most trips involve a highway for at least part of the way, and a car here covers real distance every week: the Boulevard, Woodhaven Road, Grant Avenue, I-95, the runs out to Bucks County and back. Those are exactly the roads that break windshields. Concrete slabs with open joints, constant lane changing, heavy truck traffic and long stretches where you sit at fifty-five behind somebody throwing whatever their tires pick up.
What that means practically is that Northeast calls are almost never emergencies and almost always overdue. The chip arrived on a highway, nobody saw it happen, it sat through a summer and then went in a cold snap. The good news is that it is a straightforward area to serve: off-street parking is normal, so the mobile van can usually do the whole job at your house without anybody moving a car in traffic, and if you would rather bring it in, the Boulevard runs from your door almost to ours. Roosevelt Boulevard is the backbone and the problem, twelve lanes for much of its length with service roads, median gaps and the sort of junction spacing that produces constant weaving. Woodhaven Road and Grant Avenue link it across to I-95, and both are fast, jointed and heavily used by trucks. Cottman Avenue and Bustleton Avenue run the older commercial corridors with buses, shopping traffic and endless driveway entrances. Academy Road serves the far northeast neighborhoods. Away from those, the residential streets are wide, quiet and modern by Philadelphia standards, with driveways, garages and space at the curb, so a car in the Northeast is rarely parked where anyone brushes past it.

One, highway stone, and by a wide margin. The Boulevard, Woodhaven, Grant and I-95 supply nearly every windshield chip we see from the Northeast. Two, concrete joints. Long jointed slabs put a regular rhythmic shock through a car at highway speed, and that rhythm is what turns a stable chip into a running crack over a couple of weeks. Three, winter salting on the fast roads, which coats glass in a slurry that wipers then drag across it, dulling the surface and hiding fresh damage. Four, shopping center and mall lots, where door dings, cart strikes and tight bays account for a surprising amount of broken mirror and quarter glass. Five, break-ins, which happen but are far less common than on a rowhouse block.

If you have a driveway or a garage, let the van come up; that is the whole point of a mobile service and the Northeast is the easiest part of the city to work in because there is space around the car.
